What will be created:An 18ft x 90ft outdoor, instillation/mural. Location:Heights Theater - M Squared Gallery 339 W. 19th St. Houston, TX 77008Building Owner:Gus KoprivaOverview/Background:The Houston Heights is a community located in northwest-central Houston. The area is rich with culture and has a large artistic community as well as historical significance. Of the many galleries and historical buildings in the area there is one with a fascinating past which stands out. Heights Theater on 19th Street was built in 1929. There were many popular films shown there and it has survived despite the arson in 1968 which destroyed its inside. The arsonist responsible is still unknown to this day; however, there is rumor of the reasoning behind the burning. A controversial film of the time “I am a Curious Yellow” was on view at the Heights Theater. Many of the churches in the area as well as various other individuals were furious about having the film shown in the community. The torching of the theater may have been a direct attempt to censor artistic expression. And for a time, it seemed as though the arsonist succeeded. The theater was shut down and then placed on the market for sale. It remained vacant for several years. Not until 1988, when Sharon and Gus Kopriva purchased the building, did it regain its vivacity. The theater is now home to Gallery M Squared. Despite the challenges of the past, the theater is still a place which houses artistic expression and freedom of thought. As an artist and native Houstonian who has exhibited and worked in the Heights, I continuously look for opportunities to develop new ideas and projects, gain inspiration, and add to the culture of the community. The outside wall (18x90ft) of the Heights Theater is fully visible from the street and is a perfect space to for a new community mural. The art/medium/processes: The mural will be imagery of Texas wildlife (as seen in the supporting images). Almost all of the animals included in the composition are endangered/ threatened. The imagery will be painted onto aluminum panels which are made with a special lightweight filler material. There will be 44 panels (4ftx8ft) weighing 34lbs each. The panels will be mounted to the wall after they are completed. The paint to be used is Nova Color acrylic products. Nova Color has been in business since the 1960’s and specializes in vibrant outdoor mural paint. They are the best (http://novacolorpaint.com/)Products:- degreaser -Acrylic Primer -paint -top coat - anti graffiti coatResult:-This community mural will be a long lasting contribution to the aesthetic quality of Houston by adding visual interest to the building walls.-Expose citizens and tourists to public art created by a Houston based artist -add new/ contemporary art to the historical community of the Houston Heights -be a reference to the nature and wildlife of Texas for inner-city dwellers-There will be an event/opening to promote the art, sponsors, and wildlife. This will be beneficial to all parties involved as well as the public.-add to the professional and personal growth of a local artist

bio Stephanie Darling grew up in Houston, Texas. She recieved her Bachelors of Studio Arts in 2009 from New Mexico State University. She now residees and works in Houston, Texas. In Summer 2011 she completed an art residency in Hilmsen, Germany. She creates a variety of visual art in different mediums including oil painting, printmaking, photography and water color.

Some of my administrative tasks include updating vendor account information, organizing events, calendaring all conferences/festivals the store attends as well as assisting customers and drafting letters to account holders. I negotiate co-operative opportunities for the store through its various publishers as well. H Gallery, March 2010 – December 2010 As an intern, I assisted with curating, installing and hosting shows and events. I also performed sales and marketing functions.Bayou City Arts Festival, Museum of Cultural Arts, 2009 As a volunteer, I assisted with running the children’s art booth.Americorps, Rohnert Park, California 2006-2007 As a mentor and tutor for disadvantaged elementary school students in an after school program, I taught reading and writing. I independently developed a humanities program for the children designed to develop a love of classic children’s literature and art appreciation.
